Model United Nations: seeking to solve global issues

Model United Nations is an opportunity for pupils to become national ambassadors seeking to solve global issues. According to Model United Nations' own website, "there are few better ways of understanding international affairs and global politics than putting yourself ‘in the shoes of world leaders’.

Because participants discuss UN topics and represent their adopted country’s position, they will often be arguing from an unfamiliar perspective, developing knowledge, understanding, empathy and other key life skills."

At Clifton High, our Model United Nations committee involves pupils from Years 9-13, and last half term we have debated: ‘the issue of free and fair elections in Northern Africa’ and the ‘issue of tackling climate change’.

Our pupils demonstrated excellent leadership, presentation skills, teamwork and knowledge of complex topics. Our first debate next half term will be: 'the issue of women's rights in Iran' - and if you are reading this as a current Clifton High pupil, we would be thrilled for you to join us on Mondays at 1.30pm in the Rose Theatre.
