INFANT SCHOOL SPORT

Promoting inclusivity and ensuring sports are accessible to all our younger children to enjoy.

Sport

Sport is not only a social and positive part of life at Clifton High School, it also serves as a dynamic force that brings joy and a sense of belonging to every member of our community.

As a School, we pride ourselves on promoting inclusivity, welcoming every pupil regardless of their experience or skill level to participate in our Sports Programme. This begins in earnest in Reception as we follow the National Curriculum and additionally offer an extensive range of co-curricular activities through our After-School Activity Curriculum (ASAC).

  • Reception children have one on-site, timetabled Physical Education and one Swimming lesson a week.
  • In Year 1 this increases to include one on-site Games Lesson.
  • In Year 2 the childrens' Games lessons take place at our off-site sporting facility, Coombe Dingle; a multi-sports complex shared in partnership with University of Bristol.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION & GAMES

Our School site hosts multiple environments where our Infant children have their PE lessons, including a Gymnasium, Outdoor Multi-use Games area, School Lawn and theatre/studio space.  They are taught by our team of talented sports teachers and coaches to develop essential physical skills and participate in a variety of different sports including athletics, gymnastics, trampolining, cricket, tag rugby, tennis, pilates.

Children also practice for our annual Sports Day in the Summer Term during PE lessons which is a highlight for the children, parents and staff members alike.

SWIMMING

Swimming lessons in the Infant School comprise the primary element of our Swimming Programme ‘Learn to Swim’. Throughout, the children learn the fundamental technical skills required for safety and enjoyment, encompassing all swim strokes in preparation for progression into the Junior Development. 'Learn to Swim' ensures that all children will be learning one step ahead of the Governmental guidelines, setting them at an advantage for the course of their long-term swimming development.

Also at this primary stage, all Infant children will begin to learn a variety of race skills consolidating fundamentals and progressing the technical requirements of swimming. The aim is to whet their competitive appetite and stand them in good stead for lifelong participation.

Sessions are delivered within both the School curriculum and the After-School Activity Swimming Clubs, with optional access to additional sessions facilitated by our partner Club, Bristol Henleaze Swimming Club.
