Year 8 pupils welcomed Beverley Naidoo on Thursday 9th November 2023 for a virtual author visit.
Year 8 Clifton High School pupils were fortunate to meet, Carnegie Medal winning author of ‘The Other Side of Truth’ and ‘Journey to o’burg’, Beverley Naidoo. As the pupils are currently studying ‘The Other Side of Truth’ in their English classes, this was a very exciting and informative visit. Beverley enlightened the pupils with details of her life in South Africa and events that influenced her writing.
Mrs Lyons-White, Head of English, commented "Beverley helped to weave together the reality of (her) background with the experiences that the characters in The Other Side of Truth are experiencing, as well as being able to apply these ideas to, not just the atrocities in today’s world but also the need for hope in it. The importance and power of voice was evident.”
We hope that Bevereley’s talk will inspire the pupils to think more broadly in their reading and take home her message - 'not to destroy ourselves through anger and hatred'.
We thank Beverley for taking such care and attention to answer the Year 8 questions and embrace the message on her signed book plates to “Go well at Clifton High and read the world”.
