CLIFTON HIGH SCHOOL PUPILS REACH NEW HEIGHTS

- IN THEIR PURSUIT OF CLIMBING

Climbing Adventures at Clifton High School

Climbing has seen remarkable growth amongst the younger generations, and it is now one of the main pursuits in Clifton High School’s Adventure Programme. Pupils are introduced to the sport from Years 1 and 2, progressing to higher level courses in Year 4 and 6 before being given the opportunity to attend optional climbing sessions in the Senior School. Throughout the Spring Term, we will feature the House Climbing Competition to showcase the focus and dedication of our pupil climbers.

Last week, our Year 7-9 Girls’ Team reached new heights as they competed locally in a ‘speed climbing’ fixture at Badminton School where they had to complete a series of climbs as quickly as possible: hence the speed factor!  Year 9 pupil, Isobel, scaled the 7-meter-high wall in just over 8 seconds – by far the fastest of all climbers in the competition.

It is wonderful to see how Climbing has taken off in recent years and there is an appetite for the pupils who excel in individual sports to take part in something which is both an indoor and outdoor pursuit. Climbing is a technical sport which builds strength, flexibility, agility and self-confidence. We look forward to more bouldering league sessions, fixtures against other schools and the House Climbijg Competition next term.

Dr Mark Caddy, Senior Deputy Head and Adventure Leader

The many UK indoor climbing gyms have fuelled the popularity of the sport, so much so that it is now included in the Olympics, which, in turn, has increased media coverage and the opportunities available. It is an engaging pursuit that combines physical activity with problem-solving and mental focus, appealing to those individuals that are looking for alternatives to team sports.

Climbing is a discipline that requires a commitment to training that improves technique, strength and conditioning, flexibility and endurance. Through its route reading and grip control, it is also a demanding sport that builds upon confidence and overall physical fitness.

We wish all our Clifton High School pupils who are embarking upon training and competing in climbing, the very best of luck as they raise the bar to new challenges.
