Eight Year 9 pupils travelled to the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovilton on Wednesday to take part in the Grand Final of the Flying Start Glider Competition, run by Airbus. This was a competition between all of the highest performing teams from the regional finals held across the south west in February.
Clifton High School teams ‘BFG’ and ‘Jam’ took part in many activities throughout the day, including bridge building, wing bending and a parachute drop. Alexandra was in the highest performing team for the wing bending exercise, winning a certificate and prize.
Team BFG (Max, Primrose, Briac and Fran) performed excellently in the glider ‘fly-off’, where they tested the glider they had built against all the other teams in an exciting show-down. Their glider proved the most successful of all teams in the competition, achieving a winning distance of 19.9 metres, which won them a flight in a real glider!
The team also came 2nd overall in the competition, securing a £500 prize for the School, which will be spent on new STEM equipment. All eight pupils who attended the day have also received a Bronze Level Industrial Cadet certification.
Well done to all three of the teams who entered the event, and particularly Team BFG for their amazing commitment, enthusiasm and technical expertise.
