Sport forms an important part of life in the Sixth Form and timetabled sport ensures all our students take part in physical activity to take a break from their studies and to maintain fitness. Students are also greatly encouraged to pursue sport in their spare time, incorporating exercise into their routine is not only enriching - many of our students compete in their chosen sport at national level - but it is also vital for a healthy lifestyle.
Sixth Form students have an hour and a half of timetabled sport per week. There is a range of sport on offer including hockey, football, netball, rugby and more. Sports lessons take place on site or at our Coombe Dingle Sports Complex. Students can also enjoy the facilities at Horfield Leisure Centre including their fitness suite, squash courts and sports hall; for activities such as indoor football, badminton, basketball and netball.
Fixtures and tours
All our Sixth Form students have the opportunity to take part in weekly competitive sports fixtures. Fixtures take place during mid-week and on Saturday mornings. Sixth Form girls can play for our 1st teams for hockey and netball and boys can join our 1st teams for rugby and football. The 1st teams consist of the most able players from Years 11-13 and Sixth Form students take on the role of sports captain within these elite teams. Year 12 and 13 students are also invited to attend our numerous sports tours; previous tours have included a football and hockey tour to Portugal and skiing in Sunday River, USA.
A range of extra-curricular sports clubs is also on offer. Unique sporting partnerships with Bristol Rugby, the University of Bristol and Henleaze Swimmming Club provide our pupils with outstanding coaching and player pathway opportunities from participation up to international standard.
Every boy and girl is encouraged to get involved; our sporting provision is broad and inclusive so there should be something for everyone whether you are a team sport player or prefer something a little different.
Positions of leadership and responsibility
The Sixth Form Sports Captains and Heads of House acquire valuable leadership and public speaking skills via their role. Responsibilities include assisting with events such as swimming galas and delivering end of term sports reports to the whole school.
As sports leaders, a number of our Sixth Form students also provide support in games lessons and extra-curricular clubs for Years 1 to 6, increasing their inter-personal skills and acting as impeccable role models for our younger pupils.
Pupils across the school, who have been identified as gifted and talented in sport or are our sports scholars, are invited to participate in The Podium. The Podium is managed and organised by the Sixth Form sports scholars who produce an annual programme of sports related talks and discussions and bring invited speakers into School.
