Before the end of the first half of the spring term, a group of Year 9 pupils visited Bristol Central Library to participate in the inaugural Bristol Teen Book Awards.
In preparation for this special event the pupils, along with others who would be attending from various Bristol secondary schools, enjoyed reading the shortlisted books.
On the day they had the opportunity to meet the authors, discuss the works, learn about their creative processes, and participate in bespoke literary workshops and competitions.
This celebration of the diversity to be found in young adults’ novels was very thought provoking and prompted a great deal of discussion amongst the pupils.
The winning book, which comes highly recommended by our Teen Book Award pupils, was I Have No Secrets by Penny Joelson; it is the story about a 14 year old girl with cerebral palsy who finds out a terrible secret that she feels she must act upon. Our pupils enjoyed an interesting and inspiring day and we look forward to supporting this event again next year.
